Multiple world champion Faith Kipyegon kept her dream of doubling at te Olympics alive as she sealed her 5,000m ticket in style followed by Beatrice Chebet.
Faith Kipyegon’s dream to double at the Paris Olympics is well on course after she easily clinched her ticket to the Paris Games over the 5,000m.
In what was her first race of the season, Kipyegon did not show any signs of rustiness or the injury that saw her miss the Prefontaine Classic last month as she claimed victory in a time of 14:46.28 ahead of world 10,000m record holder Beatrice Chebet, who clocked 14:52.55 while Margaret Chelimo completed the podium in 14:59.39.
Kipyegon stayed among the leading pack for most of the race and took off when it mattered most as she strolled to victory, leaving her rivals in her wake.
It was a major statement of intent for the world 5,000 and 1,500m champion who will likely be doubling at the Olympics for the first time.
Kipyegon finished the 2023 campaign in good fashion after winning two world titles as well as breaking three world records and there is hope that she will keep her form in 2024.
The mother of one will now turn her focus to the 1,500m on Saturday where she hoped to seal her place as she bids for a third straight Olympics gold medal over the distance.
With Athletics Kenya selecting the first two for the Olympics, Kipyegon and Chebet are assured of their ticket while the third name will be determined by a panel of selectors.
