The former Thika Queens attacker has opted not to extend her stay in Greece following the expiry of her contract.
Harambee Starlets forward Esse Akida has ended her three-year stay with Greek side PAOK following the expiry of her contract.
Akida joined the Thessaloniki side in 2021, initially on a two-year deal, before she extended it by one more, before the start of the last campaign.
After the 2023-24 season when he won a league and cup double, the former Thika Queens player has opted for a fresh challenge.
“My lovely PAOK. It is time to say goodbye. I’m writing this with your heavy heart knowing that you gave me your all in my three-year stay with you,” Akida wrote in her farewell message.
“From the moment I arrived in Greece, you have been nothing short of spectacular in my football journey. From the coaches, players and most importantly the fans, I felt appreciated by you all.
“You realised my dream of playing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, helped me win the Golden Boot in my first season and most importantly we asserted dominance in women’s football in the entire Greece to remind the world that we are the double-headed eagle of the north.”
Akida’s only regret, however, is that the club did not assert themselves in continental competitions during her three-year stint.
“Although we did not do well in continental assignments, I believe we have laid a better foundation for future Starlets to fly the PAOK flag to greater heights,” she added.
Akida was an instant hit at the Greek club when she won the Golden Boot award in her first season, after bagging 17 goals in 18 games, before she followed it up with 12 the following campaign.
Her exploits in front of goal had seen her attract interest from clubs in Germany, Scotland and Finland before she opted to extend her stay in Greece last year but she is now a free to choose her next destination.
