St Mirren will have to do without the Kenyan striker for the rest of the season while Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat will hope that he recovers before the World Cup qualifiers.
Harambee Stars and St Mirren have been dealt a blow as striker Jonah Ayunga will miss the remainder of the season after successfully undergoing knee surgery.
The news comes as a blow to both the player and his club, as Ayunga had been steadily returning to form after a prolonged absence due to injury.
Ayunga, who marked his debut for Kenya against Malawi in March, had only recently made a comeback from a nine-month-long injury layoff in December.
Despite this setback, he managed to make 12 league appearances for St Mirren since his recovery, showcasing his resilience and determination on the pitch.
Confirmation of Ayunga’s extended absence came from St Mirren’s head coach, Stephen Robinson, who revealed that the striker underwent an operation for a knee injury.
Despite initial hopes for a shorter recovery period, Robinson informed the press that Ayunga would miss the rest of the season.
However, he clarified that the injury sustained was not to the same knee that had sidelined the 26-year-old for the majority of 2023.
Ayunga’s time with St Mirren began last summer, where he quickly made an impact by netting seven goals in 24 appearances before suffering a ruptured ACL in January.
His absence will undoubtedly be felt by both the team and fans alike, as they had hoped for his continued contribution to their season.
