Kenya Sevens player Kevin Wekesa has explained what Shujaa are aiming at after sealing a ticket to next season’s World Sevens Series.
Kenya Sevens star Kevin Wekesa has shared the team’s ambitious plans following their triumphant return to the top tier of World Rugby Sevens.
Their victory over Germany in London secured them a spot back in the series, sending fans into jubilation and reigniting hopes for the future.
Wekesa, instrumental in the team’s success, emphasised the importance of their achievement not just to the players but for the entire nation.
“The boys did not just do it for themselves. They did it for their families and the 40 million plus Kenyans who rallied behind us,” he said.
At just 23, Wekesa has quickly risen to a leadership role within the squad, having made his Shujaa debut in 2021.
Under the guidance of coach Kevin Wambua, the team has fostered a strong sense of unity and determination. This camaraderie has been a key factor in their impressive performances, making them a formidable force on the field.
With their place in the World Rugby Sevens Series secured, the team’s focus now shifts to the Paris 2024 Olympics. Representing Africa on such a prestigious stage is a significant challenge, but Wekesa is confident in their preparation and potential.
“Heading into the Olympics, we have high hopes and we aim to medal there,” he stated.

“It means everything to us, especially the fans who traveled to all our destinations. We have now already confirmed to them there are more destinations next season. They will give us the motivation to continue achieving our targets,” he added.
