It was another fruitful outing for Kenyan as the African Games entered the final day of the athletics programme at the Ghana University Stadium.
Kenya’s Brian Kamen was the day’s hero as he raced to a gold medal in the men’s 1500m in 3:39.19.
Ethiopia’s Shire Ermias Girma (3:39.40)and Kenya’s Abel Kipsang (3:39.45) settled for silver and bronze. Kipang was initially off the pace but recovered in the last 50m of the race to snatch bronze.
In the Javelin throw, Julius Yego lived up to expectations to run away with a silver medal after covering an impressive 81.74 metres.
\Nigeria’s Nnamdi Chinecherem posted a national record of 82.80 to take gold while Egypt’s Abdel Khaliq Moustafa settled for a distance third with 78.10 metres. Another Kenyan Alexander Kiprotich posted 75.45 to settle for the sixth place.
Efforts by Ethiopians to emulate their women counterparts in the 5,000m race flopped as other nations ran them close. Ethiopia’s Berhe Gebrhiwet was, however, lucky to run away with gold in 13:38.1.
Somalia’s Jama Mohamed Abdallahi took silver in 13:38.64 and Kenya’s Cornelius Kimboi took bronze in 13:40.61.
Kenya’s Nancy Jepleting settled for bronze in 1:15:07 with South Sudan’s Atalena Loliha taking the top honours in 1:14:36.
Ethiopia’s Gelaw Aderaw clocked 1:14:40 to finish second. Kenya’s Manuel Mkungo finished a disappointing sixth in a half marathon after clocking 1:06:30.
Eritrea’s Hailemicael Amare won the race in 1:05:04 with Ghana’s William Amponsah taking silver in 1:05:13. Zimbabwe’s Isaac Mpofu clocked 1:05:37 to take bronze.
