The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has published a list of ongoing and completed power projects in Marsabit County after Gitson Energy Limited, a Kenyan diaspora energy firm, won an appeal for the release of all power projects in the devolved unit.
The release follows a meeting organized by the Commission of Administrative Justice, Gitson Ltd., State Department for Energy PS Alex Wachira, and the Attorney General on March 28, 2024.
After the meeting, it was concluded that the ministry should furnish a list detailing existing and proposed projects within the county as of December 31, 2021.
Among these projects is the Lake Turkana Wind Farm, with a capacity of 310 megawatts (MW), which has been approved, constructed, and is currently generating power under private ownership.
On the other hand, the KenGen Marsabit Wind project, with a capacity of 300 MW, is yet to receive approval, with feasibility studies ongoing, and is under public ownership.
Furthermore, Gitson Energy’s Bubisa Wind Project, also with a capacity of 300 MW, is currently under contention, with an expression of interest filed, and falls under private ownership.
Similarly, the Kenya Mudhe Wind Power Project Bubisa, with a capacity of 300 MW, is undergoing feasibility studies and is under private ownership, but is not yet approved.
Additionally, two projects, namely Ignite Global Int. Wind Power and Sosain Energy Wind Power, both with capacities of 50, have been approved for expression of interest under the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program. These projects, proposed under FIT, are under private ownership and are pending approval.
In a significant move towards resolution, the Office of the Attorney General, acting on behalf of the involved parties, will provide a draft consent to facilitate an amicable settlement.
