President William Ruto now says his first stab at stable employment, hence a steady income, was when he was elected as a Member of Parliament.
Ruto made the revelation on Friday when he commissioned the Call Centre International (CCI) Global Contact Centre at Tatu City in Kiambu County.
The facility, according to the Head of State, has already given jobs to hundreds of unemployed Kenyans and has the capacity to onboard at least 300,000 more.
Speaking to some of the CCI staff, made up mostly of the youth, President Ruto urged them to use the opportunity prudently and put their best foot forward, while reminiscing back to the days when he did not have a job and how he eventually landed one.
“I understand what it means not to have a job…the first time I got a job was when I was elected as a Member of Parliament. That’s the first job. I did not have a job until I decided to run for Member of Parliament,” he stated.
He then told the staff: “I know that not everybody can be a Member of Parliament, the slots are very few, therefore we have to create other opportunities for others. So, good luck guys, use this opportunity well and make us proud, because when you do well, you encourage companies to come on board and give an opportunity to others.”
Ruto was elected Eldoret North MP in the 1997 elections, when he trounced the then incumbent and late former President Daniel arap Moi’s preferred candidate Reuben Chesire.
Before then, he had been a part of YK’92, a campaign group formed for the singular goal of lobbying for Moi’s re-election at the 1992 polls.
Following his victory, Moi disbanded the group and Ruto vied for various positions within the then ruling KANU party, but failed to make a mark until after the 1997 elections.
