A section of residents in Mwea, Kirinyaga, protested outside the Kiamaciri police station over the alleged escape of a murder suspect.
The suspect escaped in unclear circumstances.
The protesters on Sunday demanded an explanation on how a farmhand suspected of killing a woman in the area escaped from custody.
Police said two police officers who were said to be on duty when the suspect escaped have been arrested.
The two attached at Kiamaciri Police Station in Mwea, Kirinyaga, are said to have been on duty on Friday, May 31 when the suspect went missing from the cells.
Preliminary reports indicate Phillipino Muifi, 23, a Ugandan national was arrested in Nakuru on May 18 and was being held at the station after court allowed detectives to detain him for 14 days as they continue with investigations.
According to police, Muifi disappeared on Friday with another suspect who had been arrested.
This was after the duo broke a pipe to enable their escape.
Muifi was being detained over the murder of his employer Rose Muthoni Kariuki in 2023 before fleeing with the deceased’s phone.
The daughter of the deceased, Calorine Wangui, told journalists she was shocked to be informed by the officer commanding station that the Ugandan national accused of killing her mother in November had fled.
“I used my own money to see the suspect brought here from Uganda, right now they have released him,” Wangui said.
Kirinyaga Senator James Kamau Murango also demanded an explanation on the issue.
Muifi, 23, was arrested by a detective in Nakuru on May 18, after a pursuit for several months.
A team of detectives is investigating the saga. The team has escalated the matter to other areas as part of efforts to re-arrest the suspect.
Police promised justice in the saga.
