Leaders from Nyamira county are already on a campaign trail, three years to the 2027 general election.
Governor Amos Nyamira and Senator Okong’o Omogeni are at the forefront of the county succession politics, with both leaders using every opportunity they get to attack the others.
Others who have been thrown into the mix are current and former MPs, some of whom are eyeing the lucrative gubernatorial seat.
On Friday during a burial of one of the residents, the leaders who were attending the ceremony threw jabs at each other, with Senator Omogeni vowing to dethrone Governor Nyaribo come 2027.
“The county is in a mess, there are no drugs in the hospitals especially Nyamira Referral Hospital. Nyaribo is mismanaging the county and now he does not want us to point out these things. I am humbly begging the MCAs to commence an impeachment motion against him, so that I can get the chance to grill him at the Senate,” a charged Omogeni said.
Omogeni said the auditor’s report paints a bad picture of Nyamira County, where funds have been misappropriated.
When his turn came to speak, Nyaribo was heckled by mourners when he claimed that his government has initiated development projects, among them roads.
The mourners could not hear any of the governor’s claims, forcing him to call for calm and wait for 2027.
“Please let’s respect each other. We are all leaders here and 2027 is coming. If you feel like a certain leader has not performed well, then you have the right to remove them from office. But for now these are the things as a county we are doing to bring development to the people,” Nyaribo said.
He added that he doesn’t fear anyone, saying he is ready to defend his seat come 2027.
“We are all men, we shall battle it out when that time comes. Don’t think that because we are quiet we are weak. We shall see who is man enough when that time comes,” he added.
Speaking at the same ceremony, former MP Timothy Bosire accused the governor of being unavailable and blocking access.
Bosire said when Nyaribo was deputy governor, he was a good man reachable by everyone, especially when he had a fallout with former Governor the late John Nyangarama.
“Nyaribo, why can’t I reach you? You were very much accessible, you were a good man and a good friend. What happened? What kind of spirit is this that people get obsessed with every time they get to power? They suddenly change and become animals,” Bosire said.
Former MP Walter Nyambati, who is also eyeing the gubernatorial seat, said he is now ready for the 2027 battle, denying allegations that he is old and not fit to lead.
Nyambati came second in the 2022 election, losing to Nyaribo. He said it’s time county residents consider him for the seat.
