Peres Jepchirchir oozed class in the streets of London to break the women-only world record and here are the details of the super shoes that propelled her to make history in England’s capital.
Reigning Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir stunned her fans with her astonishing run to break the women-only marathon world record at the just concluded London Marathon on Sunday.
Jepchirchir cut the tape in a time of 2:16:16 ahead of Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa, who clocked 2:16:23 for a second-place finish. Joycilline Jepkosgei completed the podium, stopping the clock at 2:16:24.
Jepchirchir and Assefa wore the same shoes, the adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1. These are the same shoes Assefa wore during last year’s Berlin Marathon where she set the world record of 2:11:53. At the time, the shoes were retailing at Ksh 72,000 but have since reduced in price and are retailing at the Adidas website.
The shoes are reportedly only designed to last for one race with their hefty price tag that is more than the price of the shoes that the late Kelvin Kiptum wore to break the marathon world record at the 2023 Chicago Marathon.
The late Kiptum wore the prototype of the Nike Alphafly 3, the shoe that is also Eliud Kipchoge’s favourite running shoe.
Meanwhile, the shoes worn by both Jepchirchir and Assefa are enhanced with unique technology that challenges the boundaries of racing. The shoe is 138 grams and it comes with a new foam design that ensures it remains optimised for a race despite its weight.
It has a sizeable 39-millimeter heel and it has a first-of-its-kind rocker at the front of the shoe which allows the runner to be projected forward at even greater speed and in a way that allows them to expend less energy.
Meanwhile, Jepkosgei wore the Adizero Adios Pros 3, retailing at Ksh 50, 300 meaning this time around, Adidas ruled the London Marathon in the women’s race.
