Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has lost Golden Boot as Qatar Stars League crowns new champion.
Kenya international Michael Olunga’s prolific goal-scoring spree was not enough to secure him a third consecutive Golden Boot in the Qatar Stars League.
Despite his efforts Al Duhail SC faced a disappointing 4-2 defeat against Qatar SC on Sunday night marking a bittersweet end to their season.
The loss relegated Al Duhail to a sixth-place finish with 28 points a far cry from their previous successes.
The league was ultimately won by Al Assad who clinched the title with an impressive 49 points.
Olunga, who finished fourth in the Golden Boot race, netted a total of 16 goals, falling short of Akram Afif’s remarkable 26-goal tally.
The coveted Golden Boot was inherited by Brahimi marking the end of Olunga’s two-year reign as the league’s top scorer.
Last season Olunga had secured an eighth league title for Al Duhail, along with a treble following triumphs in the Ooredoo Cup and Qatar Cup.
However, this season’s campaign was marred by a two-month injury layoff for the striker resulting in his absence from several crucial matches.
The injury setback occurred during Al Duhail’s Asian Champions League match against Persepolis in December when Olunga suffered a hamstring injury.
Despite his absence, Al Duhail managed to win eight out of 22 matches, with four draws and 10 losses.
The Red Knights scored a total of 42 goals but conceded 45 highlighting their struggles throughout the season.
