The world of athletics once again witnessed a new talent at the concluded Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen, competing in the 200m.
Torrie Lewis, a 19-year-old, shocked World champion Sha’Carri Richardson to take the crown in her season opener and Diamond League debut.
Lewis clocked a stunning 22.96 to pip the American sprint queen by just 0.03 seconds. Tamara Clark stopped the clock at 23.01 to complete the podium.
The Australian youngster was born in Nottingham, England, in 2005 and growing up, the youngster pursued gymnastics.
At 16, the fastest woman in Australia had already made waves on the track, clocking an impressive 11.33 seconds in the 100m to be among the fastest Under-18 women in the world.
She continued with hard work in training and at 18, she claimed the Australian National Championship titles in 100m and 200m events.
Lewis did not stop at making history since in January this year, she clocked an impressive 11.10 in 100m, breaking the Australian Under-20 record but also surpassed the open women’s record, previously held by Melissa Breen.
She also joined forces with Ebony Lane, Bree Masters, and Ella Connoly to set a national record in the 4x100m relay at the Sydney Track Classic.
April has been her best season so far, owing to the fact that she beat the world 200m bronze medallist Richardson in the 200m. She has her focus on the 200m and Shericka Jackson and Richardson should be worried since she is not stopping at her achievements so far.
