At least two people were on Saturday morning killed and 10 others were seriously injured after a bus they were traveling in was involved in a road accident.
Police blamed poor visibility among other causes at the time of the accident which occurred at Muguga area in Kikuyu, Kiambu County.
Kikuyu Police Commander Ronald Kirui said the 62-seater bus belonging to Eldoret Express Company rammed into a fuel tanker that had stalled on the road at around 5.30 am.
“We had two fatalities and more than ten were rushed to hospitals. The area is now wet due to rains and we urge drivers to be careful,” he said.
The police also revealed that more than 10 passengers who sustained serious injuries were rushed to Kikuyu Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
Bodies of the two passengers were taken to Thogoto hospital mortuary, while the wreckage of the vehicles were towed to Kikuyu Police Station.
The Police Commander said traffic police have launched investigations so as to establish what really happened and caused the fatal accident.
“As of now we cannot tell what really caused the accident, but our traffic officers have embarked on investigations,” he said.
The accident caused a huge traffic jam, forcing motorists who were heading towards Nairobi to use alternative routes in Muguga villages and join back the highway at Kinoo.
The bus was traveling to Nairobi from Western region when it rammed into a stationary tanker.
Simon Kimani, a resident who witnessed the crash , said they were attracted by breaking sounds and a loud bang.
“We rushed to see what happened and found the bus having rammed into a tanker. Fortunately, the tanker didn’t explode” he said.
Kimani said passengers who survived started screaming for help, and the locals called the police who arrived shortly.
Road road users have been urged to be vigilant while using the highway, especially during the rainy season.
This is the latest accident amid ongoing campaign to address the menace.
More than 1,000 people have died in separate accidents in the last three months in the country.
